Computer viruses have been around for several decades. These malicious programs compromise our data in several ways, each as devastating as the next. Among these viruses, there is a particularly vicious type, which has wreaked havoc since its creation: it is ransomware.

As its name suggests, ransomware takes hostage of personal data by encrypting it and asks their owner to send money to the hacker in exchange for the key that will allow the decryption of the data.

Ransomware spreads like trojans and is activated by unsuspecting users who take little care. Ransomware is often triggered by opening an email attachment. In more rare cases, ransomware deploys when a user opens a malicious website.

 The big problem with ransomware is not to erase it from a computer, but to decrypt the files they have encrypted. The encryption is indeed very elaborate and months or even years would be necessary for a decryption.

In Tunisia, several cases of ransomware have been identified by TuniLAB. In order to avoid this vicious virus, adopt good IT security practices, activate the Shadow Copy feature in regularly update your web browsers and your anti-virus and above all NEVER open the attachment of an e-mail whose sender you do not know.
